blackberry-lotus-notesWondering how you can install BlackBerry Enterprise Server on a Lotus Notes Domino system?  Well, Michael Kinder recently wrote of eight great practices that will help to keep your BlackBerry Enterprise Server and Lotus Notes Domino system running smoothly.

  1. Is the Domino server running the BlackBerry Enterprise Server software either in the LocalDomainServers group or another part of the standard server organizational unit?  If so, add the the Lotus Domino server to a group called “BlackBerry Admins.”  Then, this group can be used to access control list needs.
  2. If your Lotus Domino server running the BES software is configured as specified as above, maker sure that all Local Domain servers are set to “Run unrestricted methods and operations” on the server document.  The BlackBerry Enterprise Server will not work well without these settings.
  3. Add BES task to the ServerTasks line in the notes.ini file of the Lotus Domino server running the BlackBerry Enterprise Server.  You could also configure Domino to load the BES task using a program document instead of creating a direct reference in notes.ini.  If not added to the ServerTasks line or in a program document, the admin needs to launch BES manually from the console each time the server is restarted by using “load BES” at the console.
  4. In the user-state databases, make sure the special BlackBerry Admin group you set up is in the ACL with “Manager” rights.  Members of the BlackBerry Admin group need “Manager” access so they can update the ACL, delete the database should the user be removed from the system, and also perform any other maintenance that might be necessary.
  5. If not using roaming profiles, user mail files should be configured using the Domino Web Access mail template in order for Personal Information Management synchronization to work properly.
  6. If a profile database becomes corrupt, delete the database and restart Domino Server to recreate the profile database from the Microsoft SQL Server info.
  7. Be sure that port 3103 (TCP) is open on the firewall for outbound initiated BlackBerry messages.
  8. Lastly, be sure to enable database pruning on BlackBerry.  This keeps the size of the user state databases in check, as it selects 20 users and tries to remove documents in the state databases in 20 minutes.

SBM-IBMAfter unprecedented growth over the last 16 quarters, and 145 million users worldwide, one would think that those in charge of IBM Lotus Notes and Domino may be tempted to rest on their laurels.  But such is not the case as Saudi Business Machines (SBM), the marketing and service representatives of IBM in Saudi Arabia, organized road shows in their country to focus on IBM’s Lotus software.  Named “Lotusphere Comes to You,” these road shows showcased the latest collaborative software solutions from Lotus to make business collaboration easier, according to TMCnews.

The shows also illustrated the entire range of Lotus products from IBM, which empower businesses and end users through the sharing of information in a team space.  They also focused on the use of the latest Web 2.0 based tools such as blogs and Wikis.  As the Lotus Software brand leader at SBM, Nazeer Aval, said:

In challenging economic times, the ability to collaborate with colleagues, partners and customers from around the world is a financial necessity.  With the latest versions of Lotus collaborative product portfolio, SBM/IBM is helping businesses save money and time by lowering TCO and identify ROI benefits quickly and easily.

text-messageOne innovative way to tell when critical agents terminate abruptly is by utilizing text messages on cell phones.  According to Doug Burns, you can enter your cell phone number as an email address, which will allow you to receive a text message on your phone when an agent terminates.  Conversely, you can correct terminating agents by setting up a mail-in database to receive a text message and trigger the agent.

But, in order to use text messages this way you need to create a mail file that is associated with a mail-in database.  Also, you need to create an agent that runs when new mail arrives.  Then send a text message to the address of the mail-in database and give it a code or one-word name in the body.  The agent receives this text and then uses it to restart or run the agent.

linkedinBack in January, IBM announced that it was partnering with LinkedIn to create a plug-in that would integrate the social network into Lotus Notes.  As reported by TechCrunch, the new plug-in will be used to display relevant information about people in your emails, as well as providing a simple way to look through LinkedIn’s features.  It should be mentioned that you will still need to look them up and click on their names, but an automatic lookup is planned for a future release.

The two companies have also announced a LinkedIn integration into Lotus Connections, as well as an option to launch a Bluehouse web conference directly from someone’s LinkedIn profile.  However, there is no set date for their release.

As for the LinkedIn plug-in for Lotus Notes, IBM revealed in January that it would be released some time this year.  There seems to be some light at the end of the tunnel, though, as it was just released to employees at IBM.

28568To the delight of many, IBM has announced that they will ship a copy of Lotus Symphony version 1.3 with every copy of Lotus Notes and Lotus Foundations.  Yet, what exactly is Lotus Symphony?

According to a press release, Lotus Symphony is an alternative to Microsoft Office, which will allow millions of companies and consumers to save hundreds of dollars.  Not only does this cost-free software provide support for Microsoft Office 2007, but it allows users to drag and drop plug-ins, extending its use to other business applications.

The vice president of Lotus Software, Kevin Cavanaugh, said, “IBM is delivering on its commitment to free businesses and consumers from having to pay licensing fees over and over just to access their own personal or company information.  Now, it will be much harder to justify paying Office licensing fees when you can preserve and access your Office documents for free using Lotus Symphony.”

So far, the plan has received high praises.  In fact, Mark Clemence, the IT Director for Cluttons, stated, “The opportunity to use fully supported office productivity tools as part of the deployment of Lotus Notes 8.5 was too good an opportunity to be missed.  We plan to use the cost saving to further invest in Lotus productivity tool sets.”
